We also had a special Trainers award.

When asked what a hockey Trainer is, we often paraphrase by saying that they are our "First Aid, Risk Management people". Although, that isn't wrong, it does not really represent all that our trainers do. This year the Hockey Development Centre of Ontario has launched a Recognition Program that offers Minor Hockey Associations the opportunity to celebrate a great trainer in their club.
Hockey Trainers are required to certify and pass tests through HDCO. They need to demonstrate a focus on enhancing safety and wellbeing of all participants while working with other bench staff to foster an environment where young players can set goals, learn hockey skills and strategies in a competitive but safe environment. Its more than just first aid. Its about being that person who listens, who encourages, and who pushes our children to be better hockey players and contribute to a team, and support children in making good decisions about their safety and the safety of others around them.
This isn't always an easy task. Hockey is a fast paced, exciting and skill based sport. High standards of integrity, sportsmanship and safety are asked of our trainers.

We are very fortunate to have someone in our association who has high standards and expectations for the players on their team. A trainer who asks players give their all, every time they hit the ice. We are grateful to have a trainer who understands the competitive nature of the sport but always puts fun, safety and sportsmanship first.

In this first year of recognition, we would like to congratulate Meghan Brown.  She worked with the novice team and IP orange.Meghan could always be relied upon to have an eagle eye out for players on the ice, and to be quick to ensure the safety and well-being of hockey participants. Her experience in competitive sports was evident through her interactions with players where she discussed with them their goals and encourage them to acknowledge their hard work and accomplishments regardless of the score on the board. We are great for the opportunity to recognize Meghan for her efforts this year as a volunteer hockey trainer.
